Traditional Native Canoes Help to Open the Interior to Industry

For centuries these canoes have been used by native Renganese for travel and fishing. Here they were put to use transporting this truck and its load into the interior where new mines are being opened up. Here the river is so shallow that the truck had to cross unloaded. Even so, the craft often ran aground, necessitating much labor to get it off. Where streams were shallow, the rafts were poled, when deep, paddled by natives to the accompaniment of lusty song.
