From March 20 until May 4, 1981, the exhibition, "Racism/Sexism: Same Game, Different Name" organized by Jerry Kearns, was held at the Fine Arts Center Gallery at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. On April 5, 1981, the night of the opening reception, I chained and locked myself to the doors of the gallery. I handed out leaflets which explained my protest and raised questions about the nature of the art in the show. Local police soon arrested me on charges of trespass and disorderly conduct. A pretrial hearing was held on May 17, 1981. The charge of disorderly conduct was dropped and I pled guilty to trespassing. the case was continued for six months without finding and was dismissed at that time.

Documentation is limited to materials generated by the art activity itself. Official police reports were obtained from teh Amherst Police Department under provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. Photographs by news reporter Gordon Daniels are shown here courtesy of the Daily Hampshire Gazette of Northampton, Massachusetts. The Gazette holds copyright to the images. Transcripts of the pretrial hearing were discarded when the case was dismissed.
